Bringing in a significant amount of business is all about first impressions. And naming your design business is vital to create a solid first impression.
But even though a rose by any other name might just smell as sweet, a design business by the wrong name can crash and burn if you’re not careful.
If you’re thinking of starting your own design business, take a look at a few of these essential pointers for naming your design business:
Make it easy to remember
The most important thing to remember when naming your design business is to make it as memorable as possible. Think about some of the most memorable company names in the world, Coke, Google, Apple.
Why are they memorable?
Their short, easy to say, easy to spell, and easy to comprehend. The perfect formula for a memorable business name.
Make it easy to say
No one likes to say “Hey let’s call John from ‘fill in the blank’ design agency….or is it pronounced ‘fill in the blanc’?”
Make life easier on your clients: don’t make them guess how to pronounce your name.
Have you ever seen the movie, That Thing You Do? The one-hit wonder band that stars in the film called themselves the Oneders (pronounced wonders). It wasn’t until a few people called them the O-knee-ders, that they decided it was too hard to understand. From that moment on, they went by the Wonders.
Make your name easy to say.
Make it easy to spell
Maybe you have made an easy-t0-say name, but is it easy for your clients to spell your business name?
This is especially important when you communicate with clients via email a lot and grows even more important when your clients need to type your URL frequently. Don’t frustrate them by spelling your business name in a weird way just because the URL is available.
You might think it’s easy to spell Grafixashun, but your clients will hate you for it.
Use it to brand yourself
While you don’t need to name your business “Classy Web Design”, you may want to consider developing a successful tagline that will help brand you and remind your clients what you do.
Take the following name for example:
BookSeven Brand Specialists
BookSeven on it’s own works just fine for short, more casual settings. But when it comes time to really brand yourself, you can add a tagline like “Brand Specialists”.
Make it marketable
Lastly, you need to make sure you can market yourself under whatever name you choose. Double check and make sure you can get URLs for the name you choose, twitter accounts, facebook pages, youtube accounts, or whatever other online properties you deem valuable to success. How lame to name your business Catch22 and then you have to have a youtube channel named CoolWebVids.
Granted, sometimes you can pull it off, but if you’re starting from scratch, you might as well find a name you can use everywhere.
What’s your name?
