Freelance designers: don’t set new year’s resolutions this year!

Today, to kick off the new year, I want to extend a very unique challenge to you: don’t set any new year’s resolutions for your design business this year. Why would I extend such a ridiculous challenge? Watch the video embedded in this post to find out.

After watching the video, leave a comment and let me know what you think.

  1. This is a great video for setting a goal.

  2. Awesome idea Preston. Congrats on already hitting your new year’s goal of working out. Videos is something I’ve tried to get into but haven’t yet.

I’ve used 3 words to define my 2012 lifestyle: Transform, Connect and Produce.

    • Preston D Lee says:

Melissa, that sounds super-interesting. What do each of those terms mean when it comes to having success in 2012?

  3. Great video! I’ll start writing down my goals right away! Thanks GDB

  4. Great idea Preston! Makes it easier to achieve a goal than a resolution! Thanks!

      Joann,
I’ve failed at a lot of “Resolutions” because they’re so vague. But when I can set a goal with specific “what”s and “when”s, I see a lot more success.

  5. Thanks for the great post Preston!
One of my goals for end of January is to stay in touch with previous clients by setting up a monthly or quarterly email marketing strategy. It’s always easier to keep existing clients than it is to find new ones.

    • Preston D Lee says:

That’s a great goal! I’d love to hear more about how you plan to stay in touch. In fact, I bet a lot of GDB readers would enjoy reading about that. Care to write a brief post about it after you’ve tried it out?

    • Hi Betty:

Do you have a favorite email/marketing management system (like Constant Contact, Campaign Monitor, etc.) and why? I’ve used both of these but I’m curious if there’s something else out there you like or if you’re just starting out, I can tell you which one is my favorite.

      • Hi April,
As a matter of fact no I don’t. I’m still researching the options. I signed up for a Constant Contact seminar and the instructor became ill and cancelled. What’s your recommendation?

  6. Awesome post! Watching a video is always easier to absorb the information. I would definitely love to see more!

  7. Cool to add video, Preston! It gives all of us readers a face (and a voice) to go with your name.

I also like that your video is short and to the point. I’m not totally sold on video and video tutorials yet because I always feel like I can absorb the written information faster, but seeing you’ve got a short video that I can listen to makes me more interested in watching it. When I see the length as over 7 or 8 minutes long, I check out…

I also love your point – goals are specific, whereas resolutions are general and the feeling is “well, I tried in January…” and no harm, no foul. Goals (firm believer here in both long- and short-term goals) help you see progress and real results, especially if you’re tracking them via an accounting program, a spreadsheet, or heck, even a tally on the wall!

    • Preston D Lee says:

      April,
Thanks for the kind words. I am excited to include more video on GDB this year and I feel the same as you: I hate long, drawn out videos that take forever to get to the point. For the most part, you’ll only see short (less than 2 minutes) videos here at GDB.

Great point about goals too. How do you keep track of your goal setting and reaching?

  8. My new year’s resolution is to read less online blogs.
